The food industry, as with almost everything else, was turned upside down in 2020. Restaurants closed, meal and grocery delivery increased drastically, cooking at home grew more popular, and inevitably new eating habits started to take shape. We took a look at the changing habits we’ve seen so far and put together a list of food trends we predict will be prominent in 2021 (although if 2020 has taught us anything it’s that you never really know what’s going to happen!)
1. Plant-based alternatives
Last year we predicted meatless meat, like that created by ‘Beyond Meat’ and other similar plant-based meat producers, would gain more traction, and it looks like its growth will continue with even more vigor in 2021. There is a growing appetite for not only plant-based meat alternatives but also dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese. Get ready to see more inventive vegan options on restaurant menus with plant-based alternatives in 2021!
2. Immune-boosting ingredients
For obvious reasons, the importance of having a strong immune system was at the forefront of our minds in 2020. It’s no surprise then that we expect to see foods that contain immune-boosting ingredients to be the top choice for many in 2021. From turmeric lattes to salads packed full of veggies, expect to see a lot of hype around food containing immune-boosting ingredients like ginger, turmeric, and probiotics this year.
3. Supporting local
2020 was a heartbreaking year for many, including many restaurants that had to close their doors indefinitely. People have increasingly turned to ordering from local restaurants to help them through this tough time, which their bigger counterparts can weather more easily. Instead of going for the industry giants this year, we expect to see even more people opting to go local and supporting small businesses and restaurants. 4. Individual portions
Gone are the days of shared platters with double-dipped forks and birthday cakes splattered with someone else’s saliva. Instead, a new way of eating together and sharing celebrations looks to take hold in 2021.
